Suzuki Maps Out a Course for an Electric Future
Suzuki UK is set to discontinue the Ignis, Swace, Swift Sport, and Jimny LCV, with limited stock remaining. Once these models are sold out, they will no longer be available in the UK. However, the all new Suzuki Swift, along with the Vitara, S-Cross, and Across plug-in hybrid and hybrid SUVs, will continue to be sold.
The Japanese brand is shifting its focus to launching its first all-electric car in the second half of 2025, with additional EV models to follow through 2030. To prepare for this transition, Suzuki UK is aligning its brand and dealer network with UK regulations and will streamline its model range starting at the end of this year.
Commenting on the decision, Dale Wyatt, Suzuki UK's managing director, said, "The departure of these models will make room for EVs and enable us to compete during a period where our sales ratio of hybrid versus EV products will drive our business."
Phasing out these four models is also intended to help Suzuki comply with the UK Government's Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate, which requires carmakers to meet specific sales targets for electric vehicles each year or face a £15,000 fine for every non-ZEV car sold beyond their allowance. The percentage of EVs in most brands' sales will increase annually, rising from 24% in 2024 to 80% by 2030. In 2035, the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles will be banned.
Suzuki's first electric car will be based on the eVX concept revealed last year, featuring chunky proportions and a 310-mile range thanks to its 60kWh battery. The production version of this small electric SUV is expected to compete with the Jeep Avenger and Kia EV3, among others in this popular class. It will be one of five EVs that Suzuki has pledged to launch in Europe by 2030.
