Who Can Drive Your Motability Vehicle?

Motability Named Drivers

You can add up to three named drivers to your insurance policy as part of your Motability lease. These drivers can be family members, friends, or a carer or guardian.

Direct Line Motability (DLM) manages car insurance for all named drivers.

Key Rules for Named Drivers:

Full UK Driving License:

All named drivers must hold a full UK driving license that allows them to drive a road-bearing passenger vehicle.

Age Restrictions for Drivers 25 and Under:

Drivers aged 25 or under can only drive cars in ABI Insurance Group 16 or lower, with a maximum of 120bhp.
Only one driver under 21 can be insured on a policy, which can include the Motability claimant. Consider this when choosing your vehicle.

No Recent Driving Convictions:

Drivers must not have any driving convictions or disqualifications in the last 5 years.

Temporary Drivers for Your Motability Car

You can add a temporary driver to your Motability policy free of charge for 30 days. They must follow all the scheme's rules and guidelines. If you already have three named drivers, one must be swapped out for the temporary driver. After 30 days, you can revert to the original driver. If a temporary driver is required multiple times throughout the year, they must be listed as a permanent driver on your Certificate of Motor Insurance.

Named Drivers Using a Motability Car for Work

The main claimant must benefit from the vehicle, but they do not always have to be present. Named drivers can use the vehicle for personal needs if it benefits the claimant. However, using the car for work in a way that does not directly benefit the claimant is typically not allowed. Mis-use of the vehicle can lead to forfeiting driver permissions or the vehicle itself. If no insured drivers live at the claimant’s address, a tracker may be fitted to ensure proper use.
